For a timber business, warehouse space can disappear quickly. Long, bulky materials take up significant floor space, while block stacking can leave valuable vertical capacity completely unused.
That was the challenge at Jon Walker Timber in Calverton.
An underutilised area of the warehouse was being used for block stacked timber, limiting the amount of stock that could be stored and making access less efficient.
The challenge was to create a storage solution that could handle long and bulky timber while making significantly better use of the available warehouse footprint.
The Solution
Built for long and bulky materials
Used Racking UK introduced a cantilever racking system specifically suited to the characteristics of timber storage.
The installation comprises two 16.8m long, single sided cantilever runs, standing 6.5m high, with frames positioned at 1.2m centres.
Each frame features a base and two bolted arms, with each arm capable of carrying 1,000kg UDL, providing a robust structure for storing timber.
The open fronted design allows materials to be loaded and unloaded without front uprights getting in the way, making it particularly well suited to long and bulky products.
The system also allows timber of different lengths and sizes to be stored with greater flexibility, while the vertical configuration makes far better use of the available warehouse height.
The Result
From underused floor space to productive storage
The completed installation transforms the previously underutilised area of the warehouse, allowing Jon Walker Timber to take its storage upwards rather than continuing to spread stock across the floor.
The cantilever configuration provides clear and practical access to timber, while the increased use of vertical space creates significantly more potential from the same warehouse footprint.
The result is a more organised, accessible and space efficient storage area that is better suited to the way timber needs to be stored and handled.
